Welcome.

I’m an author and award-winning journalist whose work explores the intersection of art, memory and loss. My writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Boston Globe, HuffPost, Atlas Obscura, Lit Hub, The San Francisco Chronicle and elsewhere. A former culture reporter for The San Francisco Standard, I’ve written hundreds of articles covering art and ideas of the city.

The New York Times has highlighted my reporting as “Local Journalism Worth Reading,” and I’ve been honored for general excellence in arts and culture reporting from the Society of Professional Journalists. I’m the author of Belomor: Criminality and Creativity in Stalin’s Gulag.
