I’m an author and award-winning journalist whose writing has appeared in The Boston Globe, HuffPost, KQED, SFGATE, Alta, The San Francisco Chronicle and elsewhere. As a culture reporter for The San Francisco Standard, I wrote over 300 articles exploring all aspects of the city.
In 2023, The New York Times included my reporting in a round-up of “Local Journalism Worth Reading.” In 2024, I was honored for general excellence in arts and culture reporting from the Society of Professional Journalists. My fiction writing has won prizes at the Mendocino Coast Writers’ Conference and the San Francisco Writers’ Conference, and it has been published in Hunger Mountain, the journal of the Vermont College of Fine Arts.
I’m the author of Belomor: Criminality and Creativity in Stalin’s Gulag and have studied in Moscow as a Fulbright scholar. I’m currently working on a book project that emerged from my reporting about an international art mystery.
